Chapter 133. The big exchange

"The vase is too big. I didn't take it. I just got these for you." The little old lady whispered.
"Ma'am, you don't have to busy yourself. You don't have to boil water for me, just pour cold water for me." Lin Qing He said.
"Then come in." The little old lady carried a bundle of firewood into the yard, and then entered the house.
Lin Qing He gave her six national food coupons. Each of them was about five jins, a total of thirty jins of national food coupons here.
Seeing so many food coupons, the little lady's eyes fired out a ray of light.
Thirty jins of national food coupons can be exchanged for forty jins of food coupons on their side!

ReplyDeleteIt was the time period, when the communist took over, things that had previously showed wealth was basically outlawed. If you were catch with it, most likely a trip to the re-education camp was in store for the whole family. So ppl quickly got rid of them, and since they had no value but possible death it became "junk"

LQH is the only person in the story who knows that the PRC will loosen the rules about gold, silver, jade, paintings, calligraphy, etc. in the future. At least, she is the only one at this point of story.
DeleteThere were a lot of people who kept those things in that era for their own use (or as inheritance). But, they're either bringing those things to foreign countries and became immigrants, have been captured and "re-educated" for having forbidden items while the gov. confiscated the items, or they lived like the little old woman--treat those valuable as trash. Most people in PRC at that time didn't know that the those items would became valuable again.
That ma'am at the beginning of though lol. I feel sorry for guys. They gotta apologize even when they aren't at fault and have no idea what they did wrong. That said, it's the fastest way to make up: just apologize and work the details later.
ReplyDeleteI really hate that 'the girl is always right' reasoning. If you did wrong you should acknowledge it and say sorry for it. Although I know that it is not directly her fault, but the real LQH. She should have at least be more understanding, she already anticipated that ZQB will get angry once he found out.
ReplyDeleteThat logic where if your wife is wrong you just have to suck it up is mad dumb. Any grown up need to take responsibility and y’all keep saying it wasn’t her so what. She’s in that body , she didn’t t even let the man be mad for a day or two. Just because she gave him sex she assumed he should get over it, like what kind of logic is that. Either way she wouldn’t find another man during that time to treat her the way ZQB do.
ReplyDeleteI'm a girl myself but I don't like that logic. Although it's good to be coax when angry, when they apologize without knowing what's wrong, they'll just repeat it. It'll also come in time that they won't treat it seriously as they find it easier just to apologize without understanding it. Worst, when all the romance dried up, they'll slowly find you unreasonable and irritating.

ReplyDeleteCommunism isnt that bad like american saying there are lot of version for sure and its rally depends on ppl who leading too. I didnt lives in communism era but when i was born right after this and it was shit i still remember how all of our neighborhood friend hungry all time, in summer long day parent go to work early and we go out with them and play like 8 hours outside only on water, when parents come we eat but not to full winter we sleep early and morning i go to school its how we grow up listening when communism was there all ppl have work (everyone will have work is really sounds good too cuz most adults become jobless factors shutting down one after one) and shops were full of breads and stuff it sounds dream to me. For real libaral freedom ooh its better than food? For me to kid my parents old days sound too good. Yes there where good side too sure novelist peotry journalist can write whatever they want and if u are rich gov didnt take ur things. But for me that time was hard man really hard. Now its becomming better for me i have full time job and stuff. but there are still kids who starving i know for sure. (And upper guys who have power and money still doing whatever they want)
