ReplyDeleteYeah, especially when they get a stepmother. Anytime a novel has that as a plot point, they use the saying "When one gets a stepmother, one also gets a stepfather".
DeleteI don't agree with an earlier commenter from several chapters ago saying that Wang Ling gets to live a more liberated, therefore more fulfilling life doing what she wants to do, because of her divorce. She lives in a freaking shack and her kids got turned into pariahs.
Right. Not to mention, she not only ruined her family, she also ruined her brother-in-law's reputation. Looking for a prospect wife would be difficult for him in the future.

Her survival is on the line here, so it's not weird that she chooses to feed herself first, since her kids are getting regular meals from their paternal family. Delete@Anon It was mentioned in one of the previous chapters that Wang Ling's food and clothing have improved greatly since she started sex work. Her business is booming so she has every duty to at least provide some child support to her children.
