Chapter 433. Comparison make people miserable
Judging by his reaction, Xu Sheng Mei knew that Zhang Mei Lian had no hope and said, "I thought you two were dating. From so far, she ran over to find me."
"You stay away from her. Being with her will implicate your name." Hu Zi advised.
Xu Sheng Mei gave no response and asked about her brother's studies.
Hu Zi said: "I don't know. I'm not in the same class as Qiang Zi. When I asked him if he had anything he didn't understand, he said none."
Xu Sheng Mei nodded. Since she was here, she dropped by her uncle's. Then she went to look for her grandma and grandpa.
But this time, Father Zhou and Mother Zhou didn't show her any good face.

Xu Sheng Mei froze for a moment. Obviously, she didn't expect this side to know. How did they know? It was quite a distance away.
However, Xu Sheng Mei didn't pursue this point anymore. She hurriedly explained, "Grandma, although Qiang Zi beat someone into the hospital, those people were too much..."
"Too much? Did they hit Qiang Zi or what?" Mother Zhou asked with a frigid expression.
"No." Xu Sheng Mei paused.

"Don't make excuses for him. That's the way he is. No wonder your uncle and aunt aren't willing to let him come. How had he come and he got into a fight. In the future, don't bring up these nonsenses in front of me, otherwise don't come!" Mother Zhou said with annoyance.
She felt that she was being used as a gun by this granddaughter. Now she dared not find Fourth's wife. She felt guilty. She had often criticized in her heart that Fourth's wife was too adamant and didn't show any mercy.
Now that something like this happened, Mother Zhou felt she had no face at all.
Thinking about it, she felt it was fortunate. Fortunately, Fourth’s wife had an uncompromising attitude on the matter of Qiang Zi coming. If he came and hit someone at their side, what to do? Would it sound good if spread out? Can they still do business?

If you beat someone into the hospital, you are wrong even if were right. Also when someone makes irresponsible remarks behind your back, then you can work hard and get results so that everyone can acknowledge you.
But he went straight up and beat the person into the hospital. What else was there to say? He was just like a gangster!
Xu Sheng Mei sat on the cold seat for a while before she got up and left.
But when she headed out, she saw Wang Yuan coming over in a car. He then walked over with two nylon nets of apple for Father Zhou and Mother Zhou to eat.
This was someone who knew how to interact. He will come over every now and then or he would have a meal here or bring things over.
This made Father Zhou and Mother Zhou have a particularly good impression of him. Not to mention Father Zhou and Mother Zhou, even Zhou Xiao Mei and Su Da Lin were the same.
Wang Yuan didn't know Xu Sheng Mei. When he and Er Ni actually started dating and started interacting with old Zhou Family, Xu Sheng Mei had already married.

A car can't be casually bought. Zhao Jun wanted his parents to buy one, but was still hesitating to find Father Zhao and Mother Zhao, even when Zhao Family had a lot of money!

"Grandpa, grandma, why don't I know who he is?" Xu Sheng Mei came in and asked with a smile.
"Didn't you go back?" Mother Zhou said.
"Well, I was curious." Xu Sheng Mei smilingly replied. Her face can really endure. She didn't care about Mother Zhou's words at all.
"This is Er Ni's boyfriend, called Wang Yuan. He's also the boss of your aunt's partnered garment factory." Mother Zhou introduced.
Mother Zhou purposely gave a detailed introduction. Who told you to find someone yourself and found a man to treat as your ancestor!
Take a look at the guy your aunt found for Er Ni. Not only was he richer than Zhao family, but more importantly, he was capable, filial, and kind. Could Zhao Jun who looked at people with his nostrils compare to him?
Wang Yuan knew who Xu Sheng Mei was now and nodded without saying anything.
Xu Sheng Mei turned around and walked out of the house. There was fury in her eyes.
Sure enough, she was biased. She was scolded like that for being with Zhao Jun as if she was a loose woman. A social-climbing woman. With a turn of a head, she introduced a rich man to Er Ni.
At this young age, he can even afford a car and got his own garment factory. This was a big boss!
She racked her brains to get such a marriage with Zhao Family, while on Zhou Er Ni didn't have to do anything. Her aunt introduced her to such a man!
If she was willing to introduce someone like that from the start, would she find Zhao Jun's kind?
The rest of the family were all working. Only Zhao Jun didn't go to work. The family was rich but the family hadn't separated yet. When the family separates later, what to do?
Marrying into Zhao Family seem glorious on the surface, but in fact, it was a matter of planning. Effort and energy costing.

ReplyDeleteYou were the one who didn't want to study, yet you have the audacity to blame your aunt? That Wang Yuan lad was attracted to Er Ni without having Er Ni to do anything. He was charmed by her intelligence and temperament
Honestly, I agree with Xu Sheng Mei, MC is a bit biased. While her choice is questionable, she saw an opportunity and she took it. Why does MC act like everything has to be approved by her or it’s a crime?
DeleteWell, LQH is what people called as "a woman with strong character". Everytime, it's easy to misunderstand that she act like "everything" has to be approved by her or it's a crime. How I see it, it's not on "everything" . She only want to be the one who call the shot in her little family and in her career (including about her own shops and her employees).
DeleteThe thing is, all of her employees, and most of her family members... Even she herself think that she's ALWAYS right. She would "exile" anyone who goes against her for good. But, the truth is, she simply took her hand off of them.
But, to say that she's biased? Nope. She treated XSM equally good at the beginning. She gave her the same opportunity as her other nephews and nieces. XSM was the one who determined to walk on a different path to the one LQH had provided for her. LQH and the other Zhou didn't spent a few days to dissuade her, they spent months. As the saying goes, one can coax a horse to goes to the riverside, but they couldn't force it to drink (or something along that line). As XSM determined to walk on her own path, LQH respected her choice and let her be as long as she didn't harm her beloved. But, the way she married to the Zhao could potentially harm her beloved family. So,she treated her as "criminal" and it's totally understandable.
I understand the author wrote Er Ni to be shat on, but I can't help but admire her tenacity and her drive to hustle. Luckily enough to be brought into the Beijing from the boonies, but knows hel academic limit, so decided to hustle her way into a middle upper class wife without really do ng anything illegal at all. Her commitment to uplifting her brother also would've been a positive thing if the story is written in her pov, too bad she's just another women the author made to be shat on. Why is the author soo obsessed with finding wkmen character to shit on lol
ReplyDeleteI agree that many authors, included this one, write female characters like Sheng Mei, women who are there just be a cannon fodder, but at least in XSM's case I think the author was clear in showing (when compared with Er Ni) how she could have had a good life had she tried to invest in herself, instead of selling herself short in order to sacrifice for her brother, who is ungrateful and uncapable, besides, at least to me, is clear that XSM is a victim of her own choices and short sight.
DeleteThank you! It's so interesting to me how everyone including the mc from a modern era is willing to bash her for pregnant before marriage. She's honestly such a strong character. She hasn't even did anything outrageous,but the author wants to make her seem evil for having ambition.

Although the author does have some disagreeable views we need to remember the context of this story is China in the 70's it just reflects. Welp pity them for being assigned such roles for the sake of making the story have more dog blooded conglic3
DeleteTechnically MC did want to give her a chance to study past her limits but she blew it in favor of quick pleasures-leisure activities like watching tv. Second, more than uplifting her brother she was looking for someone who could back her up just like they were raised to believe how brothers were supposed to work. Her determination is admirable though, just full of shit choices. But she's strangely relatable as a person of average abilities who made bad choices but keeps persevering. Too bad she's destined to be another plot device to give some more drama to the plot.

With that out of the way the biggest problem with how she acts in 70.80 time period is her actions affect everyone in her family. When the only reason everyone else is doing so well is because they Have a good reputation For the times Eg. if they didn’t then their clothing shops could very easily get black listed simply because of the way the family act’s Or no one would want to marry them. The main character can very easily lose her job if she’s associated with people of low moral character for the time. And getting pregnant before marriage Is not considered a moral act of the time look at how hard the next door neighbours are finding it to get any good marriages no one wants to marry them. Also she has never taken any responsibility For potentially destroying her families reputation and as the mc is the one that bought her to city,fed,home and paid her She could of destroyed her teaching career.What I’m trying to say is she didn’t think about her family when she made the decision and now that they’re treating her this way it’s like she can’t see the reason they’re upset with her. it’s only ever about what everyone else is receiving,How she’s never received what she’s entitled to , not only that but she’s trying to destroy her younger cousins marriage because she has a vindictive mind ……When all they doing is avoiding her and her hopefully brother in Future…… as a consequence to their actions.

If they were truly in a relationship and she got pregnant then that’s not a problem but she clearly know that he’s playing so she gambled on her luck and fortunately for her she ended up pregnant. She was using that fact to climb up, which is disgusting in it self. Nothing bad about being ambitious but it’s rather the means she’s using. Let’s not even talk about her ungrateful ass. And while am at it there no academic limits, she’s just lazy and doesn’t want to work. The other niece isn’t more intelligent than her but rather it’s the character. One choose to study and strive hard while the other choose the opposite. She had a choice but she still choose that path.

DeleteThe MC has no problem with fornication, changing partners, and being a single parent out of wedlock as long as they're faithful to their partner. She wouldn't even blink on people cheating their partner as long as it didn't affect nor it related to her and her beloved. It's their business and she chose to respect the boundaries. She had said that much when she's commenting on the way Zhang Mei He, Zhang Mei Lian, and Wang Ling live their life.
DeleteOnce again, LQH's bottom line for such people is "it doesn't affect nor it related to her and her beloved." If only they're living in modern times, she wouldn't drawn a line with them (except the cheaters). In modern times, such behavior is more socially acceptable than in the time she's currently living (in '80ies). There's little to no risk of being related and/or associated with such people. But, in period she's currently living, as the anonymous original poster has said, it would bring harm on her and her family.
She has already said that she doesn't have a high aspiration to forcefully change the way those '60ies-'80ies people of PRC to accept and live with her modern values. She want her freedom of choice and people to not interfer with the way she live her own life. In turn, she respect those "old-fashioned" people 's freedom of choice and she won't interfer with their values. Let them go through it by themselves.
As a consequences of such decision, she would dislike the way XSM climbed the branch of Zhao family. Even if it didn't affect her family much in the end, it's a fact that XSM's risked it for her selfish goal. In addition, XSM used her pregnancy (unborn child) to marry into elite family and again, she used her miscarriage (her baby's death) to get her brother enter the Zhao's factory. Even if we have different view about fornication, I thought we're agreed that no one should use child(ren), an unborn baby even, to achieve their goal.
