Chapter 28 Carrying Her

Xu Xiao Jiao was stunned. She eyed him suspiciously, "Song Wei Ping, I think you are a little too casual."

Although he spoke in a serious manner without any other emotions, why did she feel that something was amiss.

Seeing that she was standing stably, Song Wei Ping put down her arm as if nothing had happened, "Aren't good roommates supposed to help each other?"

Xu Xiao Jiao rubbed her chin, "That sounds right. You are stronger than me and more familiar with this place than me. But I don't need you to carry me."

As for him carrying her, Xu Xiao Jiao shook her head. It felt weird.

The two of them walked a few steps and they arrived at the big rock he mentioned. It indeed looked difficult to hike.

It wasn’t a slope, but an undulating sharp stone. From the look of it, there was no place to step down.

Song Wei Ping chose the next best thing, "Why don't I carry you behind my back? I've been to this place a lot. I know where to put my feet. If you haven't done it before, you may be scratched by the stone. If you step on the stone wrongly, a scorpion may crawl out."

After hearing about the scorpion, Xu Xiao Jiao immediately lost all thoughts, "Then you carry me over there."

This was the second time Song Wei Ping carried her on his back. He still felt that she was very light. He stepped over the stones one by one with his long legs, as if there was no one on his back.

"Eat more in the future." He said as he walked.

Didn't this mean that she was called light in disguise? Xu Xiao Jiao found pleasure from this, "I eat a lot. Oh, it can’t be helped. I can't gain weight."

Song Wei Ping retorted silently in his heart; she didn't eat much at all. Among the five members of her family, even Xiao Gang ate more than her

Xu Xiao Jiao was lying on his back and complacently stated, "What's more, I'm perfect now. I'm not extremely thin. I'm called 'look thin when I wear clothes but have flesh when I undress'. It's perfect."

She accidentally uttered the most commonly used words of praise in later generations. She didn't realize how much impact it had on Song Wei Ping.

"Hey, hey, Song Wei Ping, why are you suddenly exerting force?" Xu Xiao Jiao sensed from the bend of her leg that Song Wei Ping exerted some strength. She didn't grab Song Wei Ping's neck. Almost leaning back, she looked around.

Song Wei Ping pursed his lips, "The stone in front is a bit high. Wrapping your arm around my neck."

Xu Xiao Jiao was afraid that she would fall. With so many rocks, falling was no joke. Hearing this, she obediently hugged Song Wei Ping's neck. Suddenly she remembered the time when they drilled into the grass hole.

"Hey, Song Wei Ping, you told me to hold you this time." It wasn't her hands that didn't follow the instructions and hold him.

But after saying this, she regretted it. Ahhh, Xu Xiao Jiao, what's wrong with your mouth! It was already agreed that they won't talk about this matter again!

Sure enough, Song Wei Ping chuckled when he heard these words, "En, you didn't take the initiative this time."

"Hey!" Xu Xiao Jiao raised her hand and patted him on the shoulder, "You didn't hear anything just now."

Song Wei Ping went along with her. It was just that there was a hint of a mirth in his voice, "Okay, okay, I didn't hear anything. Don't move. If you really, you will cry from the pain."

This was the most difficult place to walk. After crossing it, Xu Xiao Jiao wouldn’t let Song Wei Ping carry her on her back. She wanted to experience authentic nature by herself.

Song Wei Ping came here to play with her today, so he didn't bring a big backbasket. There was only a basket in his hand to hold some things she wanted to pick.

It was the first time Xu Xiao Jiao saw a chestnut tree.

The several chestnut trees on the mountain looked very old. The bark was rough and strong. The branches were lush with leaves. Many ripe chestnut shells burst open and fell on the ground.

"Wow, there are so many. No one came to pick them up?" She bent down to pick up the chestnuts on the ground.

Song Wei Ping also squatted down next to her, "In the past, whoever came early to snatch, it would count as whoever’s. But in times of famine, this thing could save lives. So can't let people come too suddenly and early to pick cleanly. Then there was a riot in the village. The village held a general meeting, except for the five-guarantee households, no one else could pick up more than 30 jins."

Xu Xiao Jiao didn't expect that there was such a rule, "Then everyone listens to the branch secretary?"

At the beginning, some people didn’t listen. They sneaked over in the middle of the night and picked them all up. The whole population of the village was angered. They banded together to find out the person and reported to the branch secretary. That year, when the community distributed the dividends, that family didn’t get any. This punishment was too severe. Afterward, no one dared to take the risk.

Hearing this, Xu Xiao Jiao nodded. This was not a bad rule. In this way, the chestnuts could basically be divided equally. Families in need could get more as it was also considered a ration.

She was not interested in how many chestnuts she picked up. She mainly came to enjoy the fun of doing it by herself. She only picked up a jin or two before stopping.

Song Wei Ping picked up some fresh ones for her, Xu Xiao Jiao tasted them. They were very crispy and tasted good.

"Okay, let's go pick the jujube. Didn't you say those are very sweet." Xu Xiao Jiao said while eating.

Hearing this, Song Wei Ping turned around, chose a place, and took her there.

He didn't go to the place that the villagers suggested. He knew that although there were a lot of mountain dates, there were too many rocks in that place. It wasn’t suitable for her to pick.

Xu Xiao Jiao followed behind him, finding that everything was novel.

The two places weren’t far apart. The place where the jujubes were picked was a sunny slope. Among the scattered gravel, clumps of thorn trees grew lushly. They covered a large area, looking spectacular.

A bunch of jujubes the size of a little finger were hanging on it. Some green, some half green and half red, some all red, and some red to the point it was nearly mahogany. This sight made people happy.

"Wow, Song Wei Ping. So many!"

Song Wei Ping bent down and picked a reddish-mahogany one and handed it to her, "Try it."

The ones that grew on the mountain hadn’t been treated with pesticides. They were all natural and didn't need to be washed.

Xu Xiao Jiao accepted it, put it in her mouth, and took a bite. After a crisp sound, a burst of sweetness burst into her mouth, "En, it's so sweet. Although it's not very juicy, it's sweet. Delicious!"

Wow, there were so many. This trip was worth it.

Song Wei Ping concentrated on picking the reddish-mahogany jujubes for her.

"If you like, I will bring you to pick it again later."

Xu Xiao Jiao nodded, "Can this be dried and eaten?"

Song Wei Ping shook his head, "This kind of wild jujube had another name, Sour Jujube. The flesh is too little and will turn sour when dried. However, it could be soaked in water to drink."

Xu Xiao Jiao nodded to express her understanding, "Then pick less. There must be children who like to pick them very much. Leave some for them."

She found it very interesting. She had never seen this kind of wild jujube before. There were small red fruits growing from the thorns, looking very cute.

This should be the wild version of jujube. After a variety of cultivation and grafting, various varieties will be derived, such as golden silk jujube, winter jujube, Jinbaotang jujube and so on. To be honest, human intelligence cannot be underestimated.

She was pondering while picking it and didn't pay attention to the sharp thorn next to the little red fruit. She accidentally got pricked, "Hiss..."

"What's wrong?" Song Wei Ping walked over immediately.

Seeing her cradling her hand, Song Wei Ping’s face changed. He hurriedly pulled her over to have a look and a drop of blood emerging from Xu Xiao Jiao's thumb entered his sight.

Xu Xiao Jiao hummed, "It's bleeding."

As soon as she finished speaking, she saw Song Wei Ping put her finger into his mouth. Then the belly of her thumb was wet for a while. She got sucked on.

"Song, Song Wei Ping, why did you bite me?" Xu Xiao Jiao watched her thumb being contained in Song Wei Ping's mouth. For some reason, her heart skipped a beat.

A feeling of numbness spread directly to her head from  her fingers. Her whole body trembled.

Song Wei Ping spat out her finger and looked up at her, "Disinfect to stop the bleeding."

He was expressionless and serious. Nothing could be seen from it.

"Song Wei Ping, I think you've turned bad." Xu Xiao Jiao withdrew her hand.

"Huh?" Song Wei Ping didn't let go of her finger. He raised it up to carefully inspect if there were any thorns stuck in it.

Xu Xiao Jiao took in his focused profile. It seemed he cared about her. There was no other meaning at all.

Oh, what are you thinking? Xu Xiao Jiao patted her head. Song Wei Ping was incapable. It was impossible for him to exude any charm to her.

Song Wei Ping was relieved that her hand was fine. Seeing her dumbfounded and silent state, he looked down at her, "Still pick?"

Xu Xiao Jiao looked at the reddened belly of her thumb, "We picked a lot. You pick some more. Let's take them back to Grandmother, Mom and Xiao Gang to eat."

Song Wei Ping told her to sit and rest. He picked lots by himself. Then he found a thorn branch with many red thorns and cut it off with a knife. Obviously, he cut off the thorns. He told Xu Xiao Jiao to hold it and play with it as she ate.

Because of this thorny branch, Xu Xiao Jiao was in a very high mood. When she got down the mountain, she held up the branch and stuffed a jujube into her mouth from time to time, "Song Wei Ping, I think I am like those who sell candied haws. All on the branch are candied haws, but mine are all small jujubes. I love it.”

She felt so rich.

Song Wei Ping was carrying the basket. Seeing how happy she was shaking her head and tail of the branch she held, he couldn't help curling the corners of his mouth.

From afar, Zhao Yan Yan saw Song Wei Ping and Xu Xiao Jiao walking toward them. Han Guang Hui who was beside her naturally also saw them.

Han Guang Hui turned his head and left without saying a word.

Chen Xue didn't understand, "Why did Guang Hui leave?"

Zhao Yan Yan pursed her lips. Hmph, other than couldn't forget Xu Xiao Jiao in his heart, what could it be? He didn't dare to say a word when he met her. Song Wei Ping would beat him up like a grandson. So useless!

But she would lose face if said out loud. Zhao Yan Yan took Chen Xue's arm, "Who knows. Elder Brother Guang Hui might have something to do."

Seeing that Xu Xiao Jiao was about to come over, she amplified her voice, "Xiao Xue, time flies so fast. We will go to the exam in a few days. Then we will go to college. After graduation, we will get a permanent job and be city folks."

Chen Xue happened to dislike Xu Xiao Jiao too. So she naturally followed along and said, "That's right, we will get our grades before New Year. This year should be our last year in the village."

Zhao Yan Yan glanced at Xu Xiao Jiao triumphantly, "Oh, it’s just Zhou Ping Xiang who didn't do well in her studies. I wonder what she’ll do if she doesn't pass the exam. Could it be that she’ll farm in Meilin Village all her life? How pitiful."

Chen Xue nodded in agreement, "Who knows. All in all, she won't be short of companions. Just can't be a college student."

The two pretended not to see Xu Xiao Jiao and left affectionately.

Xu Xiao Jiao felt that Zhao Yan Yan lost her brain. Not only did she not have any self-awareness, she couldn't discern people properly. Even she heard that Chen Xue and Han Guang Hui’s relationship was ambiguous. Like a fool, Zhao Yan Yan treated the other party like a good friend.

Seeing the inexplicable expression on her face, Song Wei Ping asked her, "What's the matter?"

Xu Xiao Jiao sighed leisurely, "I hope that the results of the college entrance examination will come sooner."

She can't wait to see Zhao Yan Yan's test results.
