The seven daughters in front already got married. So how many in-laws did they have here? So they really didn't need Cai Ba Mei to marry another big family. -> what 7? They have 5 daughters and one of them is not married. Maybe 7 children cause that would fit with 4 sisters and 3 brothers before Cai Ba Mei. And I would remove the 'so' before 'they really didn't need....'

ReplyDeleteChinese used to use 2 different kinds of ages, even in the early 1900s, it was still in use, so from this story it was still being used in the 60s. There's the actual age, based on the day you were born, called 实岁 or 足岁, and your age based on the lunar new year, called 虚岁, in which you're 1 when you're born and you go up a year every time you cross the lunar new year. The different ages were used for different things, though I don't know what for or why.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they also count the time while you were in the womb? Plus from other translated works with ancient themes that I've read, they count the pregnancy duration as 10 months or 1 year.

ReplyDeleteThe age thing is the same in Nepal, I'll explain why in Nepali terms XD so your birthday is the day you fully completed that many years of your life, so you're moving onto the next year e.g. Rina turned 14 on her birthday but after her birthdate she is completing her 15th year of life. That's why an extra year is added. I've always asked my own grandma why - I'm Nepali-Australian and this is how she explained it and what I understood from it :)
